The 0.50[N 1] BMG Cartridge was the standard Heavy Machine Gun cartridge used by the armed forces of the United States of America and Great Britain.
Description[]
There are three versions, all with rim and body diameter of 20.3mm - the Armour Piercing (AP) round weighing 46 grams with a muzzle velocity of 880 m/sec, the Incendiary round weighing 32 grams with a muzzle velocity of 1,067 m/sec and the Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (APDS) round weighing 27 grams with a muzzle velocity of 1,215 m/sec.[2]
History[]
Inspired by the 13 x 92SR TuF round,[3] the 0.50 cartridge was in service with the United States Navy as early as 1925, following the introduction of the 0.50 inch Browning M1921. This was based on the Vickers Machine Gun, and used as a short range automatic weapon.[4]
