The 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division was formed in 1943, it was moved to Italy where it served as the reserves for the 10th Army, along with the 1st Fallschirmjäger Division.
The 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division was then used for coastal defence duties near the Tiber estury. One battalion took part in the the taking of Leros island from the British and Italians.
In October, the 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division was transferred to the 42nd Corps on the Eastern front. The division then moved to Kirovgrad to contain the Soviet breakout.
The 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division was then moved to Carentan, the dropzones for the American 101st Airborne on D-Day. The weakened division was then transferred to the city of Brest. The Division was caught in the Falaise pocket and was then destroyed. All survivors were driven back to Brest where they were cut off. They surrendered afterwards.
A new division was formed in December. They fought in the defence of Germany. The new division ended the war while in the Ruhr pocket.
