The 6. SS Gebirgsjäger-Division Nord was a German unit of the Waffen-SS that existed during World War II. The unit was formed in February 1941, and was one of the primary mountain divisions of the SS. It consisted largely of Bavarian and Austrian SS personnel and was meant to be able to secure very mountainous terrain that would otherwise be very difficult to advance through. In the days following the beginning of April 1945, the Nord division surrendered to American troops in Büdinger Forest, Taunus Mountains.[1]

Commanders[]

The first commander of the Nord division was Karl Hermann, leading from February 28, 1941 to May 15, 1941 when he was replaced by Karl-Maria Demelhuber. Demelhuber would end up serving with the division substantially longer, ending his command on April 1, 1942[2] Following him would be Obergruppenführer Matthias Kleinheisterkamp who would lead from April 1st to the 20th before being succeeded by Oberführer Hans Schneider, who himself would be commanding from April 20th to June 14th when Kleinheisterkamp returned to the division, this time leading until January 15, 1943.

Structure[]

The Nord Division was made up two Gebirgsjäger regiments, SS Regiment 11. Reinhard Heydrich and SS Regiment 12. Michael Gaissmair. To complement these were two further infantry regiments, the 5. SS Infanterie regiment and 9. SS Infanterie regiment as well as an additional rifle battalion, the 6. SS Schützen Battalion. Nord was also given an artillery regiment, SS-Werfer battalion, Sturmgeschütz or assault gun battalion, the SS Ski Jäger Battalion Norwegen, Flak (Anti-Aircraft) battalion, Nachrichten (Communications) battalion , Pionier (Engineer) battalion, Panzerjäger ("Tank Hunter") battalion, Aufklärungs (Reconnaissance) Battalion, Sanitäts (Medical) Company, Veterinär (Veterinary) Company, Bekleidungs-instandsetzung (Clothing Repair) Company, Feldgendarmerie (Military Police) Troop, Werkstatt (Workshop) Company, and Kriegsberichter (War Reporter) Platoon, all titled under the 6. SS division unless otherwise stated.
