The 7.62x54mmR Cartridge is a type of ammunition that was used by the Soviet Union during WWII.
Usage[]
It is a rifle round used in Soviet weapons such as the Mosin Nagant M1891, for which it was designed, the DP LMG, and the SVT-40. It was initially a very advanced late-XIX Century smokeless powder rifle cartridge, and has never left service since. While the 7.62x39 became the prime assault rifle cartridge, only to be replaced by the 5.45x39 mm, the battle-proven 7.62x54 remains the rifle round of choice for former Eastern Block countries.

With a rim diameter of 14.4mm and body diameter of 12.3mm, the 7.62x54mmR used two types of projectile - an 11.8 gram round with muzzle velocity of 818 m/sec, and a 9.7 gram round with muzzle velocity of 870 m/sec.[1]
