The Büssing-NAG T500 was a heavy truck used by Germany during World War II.

Description[]

The T500 was powered by a 105 hp, 6-cylinder petrol engine. It could carry a payload of up to 4,750 kilograms, and therefor was mainly used as a logistics vehicle for transporting supplies and equipment. The T500 was also capable of light recovery duty, and could carry a small tank such as the Panzer I or Panzer II. The military model of the T500, designated the T500S, was identifiable by the seven in the side plated of the bonnet. Vehicles produced for the Wehrmachtinitially had open driver's cabs, but later the standard production line driver's cab, and could be identified by various other features, such as the additional storage boxes under the load bed and additional loops for lashing the tarpaulin.[1]

Variants[]

The T500S had a variant that mounted a Sauerstoff-Umfüllgerät 10-50A on the open load bed. Another closed storage compartment was added behind the driver's cab. Curiously, this type of variant was mainly used by the German Army instead of the Air Force.[1]

History[]

The T500 was designed in 1938 and production of the vehicle began in 1940 by Büssing-NAG. However, too few T500 were produced between 1940 and 1945, and therefor the T500 was used alongside the earlier Büssing-NAG G31s. The T500 saw service in theaters across the war, including North Africa and the Eastern Front.[1]
