The Benson-class of destroyers were thirty destroyers produced for the United States Navy between 1938 and 1943. Designed as an improved version of the Sims-class destroyer, these ships had two boiler stacks and a new machinery arrangement meant to better survive torpedo damage. The first six ships in the class initially started their service with Neutrality patrols, and all of the ships served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and the Pacific theaters of the war, only losing three over the course of it.
