The G.55 Centauro was a fighter aircraft that was used by Italy during World War II.

Description[]

The G.55 used a single Daimler Benz DB 605A engine that was capable of propelling the aircraft at speeds of up to 619 kilometers per hour. At first, a Fiat A38 engine was supposed to be used in the aircraft, but for better performance, the German engine was chosen. The high-mounted cockpit gave excellent visibility while an all-metal frame made the G.55 exceedingly tough and able to sustain a fair amount of damage.[2]

The total length of the G.55 was 9.7 meters while its empty weight was 2,630 kilograms. The operational range maxed out at 1,200 kilometers, perfect for the intercepting role it was intended for. Further supporting this role was the aircraft's service ceiling of 12,750 meters and closed cockpit which was different than what traditional Italian fighters often were given. Most Italian pilots at the time much preferred the open cockpit design.
