Description[]

HMAS Sydney (D48) was the flagship of the Royal Australian Navy.

History[]

The Sydney was 1 of 3 Modified Leander-class cruisers bought by the Royal Australian Navy from the Royal Navy. The other 2 ships were HMAS Perth and HMAS Hobart.

The Sydney sailed for the last time on 19 November 1941, unsuspectingly sailing by the Kormoran, who engaged the Sydney at point blank range. At the end of the engagement, both ships were crippled, with the Sydney sinking about 1 hour after the last shot was fired, and the Kormoran sinking later in night (scuttled by her crew).[1]
