USS Independence underway off of San Francisco, 1943.
The Independence-class aircraft carrier was a class of light aircraft carriers that were by the United States Navy during World War II. This class of aircraft carriers was constructed due to the interest of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who proposed a conversion of some cruisers into light aircraft carriers. The design had many limitations, but research showed that these carriers would be available much earlier than similar classes.
