The Kagerō-class destroyer(陽炎型駆逐艦),Also known as Destroyer Type A(甲型駆逐艦) was a class of destroyers used by Japan during World War II.19 of the class was built between 1939 and 1941[1]

Description[]

The Kagerō-class was an enlarged and improved version of the preceding Asashio-class destroyer. They required a complement of 240 men. The ships measured 118.5 meters overall, with a beam of 10.8 meters and a draft of 3.76 meters. They displaced 2,529 metric tons at combat weight. The Kagerō-class was designed with a speed of 35 knots (65 km/h). The ships had a range of 5,000 nautical miles (9,300 km; 5,800 mi) at a speed of 18 knots (33 km/h).

The main armament of the Kagerō-class consisted of six 12.7cm Type 3 Naval Gun (5.0 in) guns in three twin-gun turrets, one superfiring pair aft and one turret forward of the superstructure. They were originally built with four 25mm Type 96 AA Gun (1.0 in) anti-aircraft guns in two twin-gun mounts, but more mounts were added over the course of the war. The ships were also armed with eight torpedo tubes for the 61cm Type 93 Torpedo in two quadruple mounts.Their anti-submarine weapons comprised 16 depth charges.

History[]

The Kagerō-class was first accepted in 1937 (Maru-3 Programme (マル3計画), 18 ships in total;#32-34 destroyers are dummies for the naval budget to build the Yamato-class battleship) and again in 1939 (Maru-4 Programme (マル4計画), 4 ships in total)[2] and was laid down between 1937-1940.The Kagerō-class was created based off the earlier Asashio-class destroyer, which the Kagerō-class improved a lot of Asashio-class destroyer teething problems[3]. The design of Kagerō-class was used in the succeeding Yūgumo-class destroyer
