The Nazi Flag
Known also as National Socialism, Nazism was a mass political movement in Germany in the early 20th century, after World War I. It was led by Adolf Hitler, the head of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or the Nazi Party. It was made up of anti-Semitists and anti-communists. The Nazis wanted to glorify Germany and in the process destroy all people they believed to be enemies of the German people. The official symbol of the Nazi Party was the swastika. Many people the Nazis targeted were Jews, as well as Slavs, communists, Gypsies, homosexuals, the disabled, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Hitler spoke out against the Jews telling people that Jews were "inferior" and "evil" and was a sworn enemy of Germany.
The Holocaust
Between 1933-1945, Hitler murdered up to twelve million people. Six million of them were Jews. This massive massacre of Jews was then called the "Holocaust," meaning "sacrifice by fire".
