The New Orleans-class of heavy cruisers were seven cruisers produced by the United States Navy in the 1930s. Originally named the Astoria-class in the interwar period, the remaining ships in the class were reconstructed after the lead ship, Astoria, was sunk at the Battle of Savo Island. Composed of three separate designs in the class, this class was the direct ancestor of all cruisers that the United States produced from then on. This class had improvements in thicker armor on the ammunition magazine and turret armor.
