The SdKfz 162 Jagdpanzer IV was a tank destroyer used by Germany during World War II.
Description[]
Based on the PzKpfw IV chassis, the Jagdpanzer IV replaced the StuG III in early 1944. Weighing nearly 24 tons, it was armed with a 7.5 cm (2.95 in) PaK 39 L/48 gun with seventy-nine rounds, supplemented by one or two 7.92 mm (0.312 in) machine guns. This basic model was followed later in 1944 by the Jagdpanzer IV/70(V) (SdKfz 162/1) and IV/70(A) (SdKfz 162/2), both of which mounted a long barreled PaK 42 L/70 main gun.[N 1]
Requiring a crew of four men to operate, it had a Mayback HL 120 TRM engine that was capable of propelling it at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour.[2] Producing 700 hp (522 kW), this engine gave the Jagdpanzer IV a max range of 130.5 miles (210 km).[1]
The Jagdpanzer IV measured 22 feet 6 inches (6.85 meters) in length, 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters) in height over the turret hatch, and 10 feet 5 inches (3.17 meters) in width. Maximum armor thickness was 3.94 inches (100 mm).[1]
