The USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) cruises across the Pacific Ocean in 1961, now carrying jet fighter planes.
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42) was the second ship of the Midway-class aircraft carriers. Named in memory of the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who passed away in 1945 before her commissioning, she must not be confused with the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Franklin, named in memory of Benjamin Franklin.
History[]
USS Franklin D. Roosevelt was laid down on 1 December 1943, two months after the lead ship, USS Midway (CV-41). Like her sister ships, USS Midway and USS Coral Sea (CV-43), Franklin D. Roosevelt was not completed in time to see service in World War II. She remained in service from being commissioned on 27 October 1945 as a CV aircraft carrier, before being refitted and renamed to USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) in 1951, which she served as until she was retired on 30 September 1977, and was later scrapped in 1978.
